Web-based exams as they should be
For many of us, there is a special teacher who taught us something we have carried throughout our lives. He or she may have inspired us, sparked our imagination, shown us anything was possible, or simply cared enough to listen to our thoughts, dreams, and aspirations.
So when we decided to create a web application for teachers, it seemed important that it helped teachers focus on their students. It didn't take us long to realize what teachers really wanted. Something that is simple yet powerful, easy to use yet universal - makes the teacher the hero. Teachers, after all, are the busiest people we know.
We all want tools that make us more productive, and traditional HTML-based web applications are not the answer.
Web enthusiasts have coined the term Web 2.0 to describe a set of principles and practices enabling web applications to behave as rich as local PC-based software. Team Exam Professor refrains from using the term "Web 2.0" to label our web application, but our software does respond quickly, nearly real-time - allowing teachers to focus on their students rather than the technology.
Using techniques largely pioneered by Laura Arguello and Nahuel Foronda of Blue Instant, Exam Professor was converted into a Rich Internet Application using technologies such as Cold Fusion, Flex, Flash, Action Script, CSS, XHTML and JS.

Users of Exam Professor will note several key differences from traditional HTML-based web applications - mainly the ability to add and edit data without a page refresh. Exam Professor is connected to the server using Flash Remoting, which greatly simplifies the transfer of data:
- It saves bandwidth. Flash Remoting uses a binary format known as ActionScript Message Format (AMF) for transmitting data to and from the server, which greatly reduces its bandwidth requirements over previous methods.
- It goes easy on the process or the client side. Previous data juggling was done within the Flash player, which runs on the client computer. Now most data processing can be handled by the usually more robust server.
Exam Professor requires Adobe Flash Player 8.0 or later be installed on the client computer. Flash is the leading rich client, installed on over 98% of all Internet-enabled devices.
